Obituary

Albert Sidney Small, Sr. was born January 12, 1918 in Washington County, NC. He was the second oldest of 11 children born to the late Clara Small Sharpe and Sidney Small. Whit's life journey ended on Monday, December 23, 2013 at the age of 95 He was educated in his early years in Washington County Public Schools. He was reared in a loving Christian home. As a young man he joined and was baptized a member of Second Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church (Deep Bottom) under the Pastorship of Revered C.B. Sharpe. He was a beloved father; grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin. Albert (Whit) worked for 38 years at Weyerhaeuser Paper Company as a brick mason. He was an avid worker at home, work, and in the church. After being observed as a faithful and dedicated member, he was appointed to serve as Trustee and served in that capacity until declining health. He loved his members, his pastor and he was not slack in his attendance or his financial obligations. He served as an Usher for many years, a faithful and dedicated Sunday school member, attended Vacation Bible School., Pastor Aide, and he supported other church services as scheduled. He enjoyed sports and politics, and spending time with his family. October 31, 1937, he met and married the love of his life Clara Bell Holley Small who preceded him in death. He is survived two sons: Albert Small Jr. (Barbra Ann), Clarence Small (Beverly; four daughters, Annie Small-Davenport (Pastor William Earl Davenport), Barbra Vernice Small- Moorehead, both of Plymouth; Sarah Small Swinney (Layton) of Hartsville, SC; Geraldine Taylor- Mason (Billie) Williamston, NC; four of his grandchildren were reared as his own children, Pamela Bryant McNair (Pastor Benjamin McNair) of Goldsboro, NC, Cynthia Bryant Horton (Pastor James Horton, Jr.) of Greenville, NC. Waverly D. Bryant of the home and Tanya Small of Roanoke Rapids, NC, one brother of Roper, NC; five sisters, with two preceding him in death; one brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, nine great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin, and friends. Whit was preceded in death by one child, Thelma Louise Small-Bryant, and one grandchild, Donnie Renee Davenport-Young. Funeral services were 1:00PM December 28, 2013 at Second Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Hubert Judon, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Second Zion Grove Cemetery.
