Obituary

Blanche Small Saunders was the seventh of fourteen children of Tommie Small and Willie Mae Jordan Small.  She was born on December 10, 1924 and peacefully departed this life and entered into her eternal rest on Wednesday, January 25, 2017.

Blanche was raised in a loving Christian home on Hampton Farm and attended Sunday School and morning worship services regularly.  She joined and worshipped at Second Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Charlie Sharpe. Blanche was educated at Plymouth Colored High School in Plymouth, NC.

Blanche met and married the late Clarence Saunders, and from their union, three children were born; Clarence Ronnie, Beverly and Henry Lee.  She relocated to New York and worked for Banker Trust Bank until her retirement. While residing in New York, she received her Spiritual teaching at First Church of God in Christ in Brooklyn, NY under the leadership of the late Bishop Frank Clemmons and his son, Bishop Ithiel Clemmons.

Her love of travel led her to visit The Holy Land of Israel three times; she was baptized in the Jordan River in 1985.  Blanche earned a Bachelors Degree from the School of Divinity and attended The New Institute Biblical Christians Studies and Young Women's Christian Council.

As well as these accomplishments, Blanche was an extraordinary cake baker.  She served on the Hospitality Committee at her church and made delicious desserts for many occasions, earning the title "Cake Baker".

After returning to Plymouth in her later years, she became an active member of Second Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a faithful member of the Mother's Board, Worship Service, Noon Day Prayer, Bible Study, Prayer Meetings, Revivals and Vacation Bible School.

Blanche was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Saunders; her parents, Deacon Tommie and Mother Willie Mae Jordan Small; her seven brothers; Johnny, Alphonsa, Sylvester, Joseph, Herbert, William, and Walter as well as her five sisters; Bertha, Lettie, Georgia, Mable and Dr. Marjorie.

A loving and devoted mother, Blanche is survived by her children Clarence R. Saunders (Carolyn) of Brooklyn, NY; Henry L. Saunders (Jewetta) of Fort Washington, MD; and Beverly Walker (Douglas) of Plymouth, NC.

Blanche leaves to cherish her memory; her children, sixteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, one sister; Mildred Jackson (Rudolph) of Chesapeake, VA; an aunt, Helen Small of Philadelphia, PA and one sister-in-law; Edith Small.

Additionally, cherishing her memory are two special nieces; Pastor Arlene C. White and Geraldine O. Wallace.  She also leaves many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins, relatives and schoolmates.
