Clara Mae Purington was born on June 3, 1923 in Washington County. Her parents were the late Fannie McCray Dause and the late Willie Dause, who was her step-father. She departed this life at her home on April 1, 2016, after a short illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Abe Purington and one daughter, Lillian Purington.
Clara attended J.J. Clemmons School in Roper, NC; getting an education was a top priority for her during her youth. She especially enjoyed the company of her cousins "Rosie Lee" and "Buddy" (Clinton Downing) and other classmates as they walked to school with her.
Mother Clara joined Bethel Church of Christ, D.O.C. at an early age. Later, she was a founding member of New Bethel Church of Christ, D.O.C. where she devotedly attended Sunday School and worship, served on the Beautification Club, Women's Day Choir, and Missionary Board. Her faith and walking with God was important to her; she will be missed by her church family.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Clarisea of Queens Village, NY, William (Sandra), Cleo (Perlis), and Janet (Earnell), all of Roper, NC, and Abe Jr. (Lilia) of Southern Pines, NC.
Clara is also survived by twelve grandchildren: Sheri, Gary, Kenya, Kyle (Chanta), Kendal, Rodney (Courtney), Brandon (Sheena), Geneva (William), Riccardo, Avery, Anthony and Andrea.
Clara was blessed to have nine great-grandchildren: Brandon II, Reagan, Riley, Christopher, Michael (Vanessa), William, Aryanna, Naaem, and Journee.
She also leaves one god-daughter, Whitney Wilkins and a special friend, Mary Cox. Other survivors include: Rosie Davis, Vanessa, Clinton Downing, Gerard, and one uncle - Leamon Clagon, in addition to numerous other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
