George Wesley Davenport, Sr. was born on April 16, 1945 in Roper, NC. He was the son of the late James Lee and Mary Clark Davenport. He went home to be with the Lord at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, NC on May 1, 2013.

Wesley joined Union Chapel Church of Christ at an early age and also attended Mt. Eprew Missionary Baptist Church. He was educated in the Washington County school system. After attending public school, he moved to New York. After several years, he decided to move back to Washington County. He then united with Long Ridge Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Herman Young, where he served as an usher, trustee and a member of the male choir.

Wesley was employed by TysonMP2 until his retirement. He had many hobbies: fishing, hunting, and canning, but most of all he loved cooking. He was known for his famous chicken-n pastry, peas-n pastry, and Bar-B-Q. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family and preparing their special dishes.

On November 11, 1967, he married Theresa Cherry. To this union three children were born. Wesley was a devoted husband, medical provider, father, brother, uncle, granddaddy and friend.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted wife of 45 years- Theresa Davenport, daughter- Patricia Burnette- Chapel Hill, NC., two sons- George W. Davenport, Jr. (Madeline) and Alton Davenport both of Plymouth, two brothers- Alton Bernard Davenport (Odessa) and James Davenport, step-brother- Donald Teel (Sadie), two step-sisters- Geraldine Basnight (Lorenzo) and Carolyn Rich (Clarence), six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, twelve sister-in-laws, four brother-in-laws, and a host of nieces, nephews , cousins, and friends.

Siblings preceding him in death were Dorothy, Odell, Louise, Elizabeth, Aaron, Conroy, Ronnie, William, and Thomas.

Funeral services were 12:00PM Monday May 6, 2013 at Long Ridge Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. General James officiating. Burial followed in Moore's Family Cemetery McNair Road, Plymouth, NC.
