Obituary

Gwendolyn Thressa Rhines was born May 11, 1951 in Roper, NC to the late Ernest and Carrie Spruill, Sr. She departed this life on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at her home, while surrounded by family and friends.

She is preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. Her surviving family describes Gwendolyn as a devoted mother, loving care giver, and faithful friend.

Gwendolyn attended Washington County Schools and later received her Nursing license in Rich Square, NC.  She worked in the nursing field for many years and was employed by Newport News Public Schools until her retirement in June of 2013.

She accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and joined Queen Street Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Anderson W. Clary, Jr.  Gwendolyn was a long-time member of the Baptist Young Women Ministry, and advisor for the Junior Usher Board.  She was a devoted member of the Adult Usher Board, where she served as long as her health allowed.

Gwendolyn married in 1972, and leaves to cherish her memories: four children, Johnathan Spruill (Angelia) of Plymouth, NC, Vivian Lassiter (Daren),  and Teena Rhines of Newport News, VA, and Jeanna Rhines of Hampton, VA.

She is also survived by ten grandchildren:  Equwon  Rhines, Unique Rhines, and Diamond Rhines, all of Newport News, VA, Kelvon Moore, Janasia Moore, Jaqasia Moore, and Fantasia Moore, all of Plymouth, NC,  as well as three extended grandchildren.

Gwendolyn leaves four great grandchildren: Kha'mya Rhines, Valisa Rhines, Ehsan Rhines, and baby Rhines, who will be born in November of 2013, all of Newport News, VA.

She leaves to mourn, seven sisters: Carrie Norman, Emma, Norma, Elnora Spruill, Ernestine Simpson, Sandra Spruill and Regina Rawls, all of Plymouth, NC and two brothers, Ronald Spruill (Carol) of Plymouth, NC, and Isiaiah Rhines of Newport News, VA.

Also left to cherish her memories, are two sisters-in-law: Charlene Rhines and Rosie Rhines of Roper, NC; one brother-in-law: James Rhines (Catherine), also of Roper, NC; two loving friends and their families, Cynthia Hudson of Newport News, VA and Ada Duncan of Hampton, VA.
