Obituary

Harriet Elizabeth Cofield Grimes affectionately known as "Sis" was born September 8, 1920 in Merry Hill, NC. She was the daughter of the late Claud and Amanda Cofield. She departed this life on Sunday June 17, 2012 at her home in Roper, NC.

Harriet was educated in the Bertie County Public School System. She joined Peterson Chapel Baptist Church at an early age. Harriet was united in marriage to the late Luther Augustus Grimes for 52 years. To this union four children were born. While married she relocated to Roper and joined Mount Eprew Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as an usher and on the choir. She worked in Washington County School System until she retired in October 1990. In 2011, she had the honor of being crowned Roper Peanut Festival Queen.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son- Luther Grimes, brothers- Glen Cofield, Luther M. Cofield, William S. Cofield, Ulysses G. Cofield, sister- Mary R. Williams.

She leaves to cherish her memory sons- Alvin V. Grimes-Columbus, GA., Juan L. Grimes-Fort Meade, MD.; daughter- Brenda G. Hill- Roper; sisters- Amanda C. Heckstall, Shirley Watkins, Lillian Fryer all of Merry Hill,NC and Zelma Holley- Windsor,NC; brother- Willie Cofield; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 1:00PM Saturday June 23, 2012 at Mount Eprew Missionary Baptist Church, Roper with Rev. James W. Harris officiating. Burial followed in Cofield Family Cemetery, Merry Hill,NC.
