Huey Lee Brown's Obituary
Huey Lee Brown, son of Milton and Ada Martin Brown, was born October 8, 1916, in Washington County, NC. He departed this life on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Roanoke Landing Nursing Home in Plymouth, NC.
He married Pauline Sutton in 1946; she preceded him in death in 2001. From their union, two children were born.
Huey was employed at Weyerhaeuser, retiring in 1980 after forty-three years of service. He was also a faithful member of Second Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he sung in various choirs until his health declined.
Huey attended school in Washington County. He also served in the United States Army during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1945. He received the following honor citations for his military service: American Theatre Service Ribbon, European-American Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Ribbon.
He was also a member of the Golden Crown Lodge #253 IBPO Elks of the World as well as the Disabled Veterans of Washington County.
Huey was often referred to as the "Poet of Washington County". Beginning at age thirteen, he made his poetry unique by using his voice to lend excitement and emotion to his readings. Much of his work was based on events directly involving the life of African Americans. Huey wrote many poems, including "The Day Martin Luther King, Jr. Died" and "Swing Shift", which became very popular locally.
In addition to travelling throughout Eastern North Carolina to recite his poetry, Huey sang with famous gospel singers such as the Harmonizing Four and the Swan Silvertones. He even appeared on WITN-TV on the "Together with Eve" program. Throughout his career, he made records and tapes of his poems.
Huey leaves to mourn his loss: two children, Wanda K. Brown (Thomas) of Winston-Salem, NC; Westley Brown (Edna) of Windsor, NC; three grandchildren, Towanda Brown of Plymouth, NC; Ja'Mese Brown of Windsor, NC and O'Tika Jones (Jesse, Jr.) of Raleigh, NC.
He is also survived by four great grandchildren, Tywan Brown of Winston-Salem, NC, Jesse Jones, III, Brandon Jones and Eric Jones, all of Raleigh, NC; four nephews, Allen Harris (Odessa) of Plymouth, NC, Washington Harris (Sadie) and Wallace Brown, all of Baltimore, MD; Huey Lee Brown of VA; four nieces, Marie Barney of Baltimore, MC, Tissie Puckett, Rose Lee Peck and Viola Brown, all of New York, NY and Anabelle Boston of Plymouth, NC, as well as many other relatives and friends.
