Obituary

James Lee Carter, Sr. was born March 9, 1929 in Washington County. He died on April 13, 2013. He was the son of the late Estelle Carter and Lee Carter. He attended Washington County Public Schools and joined Bethel Church of Christ at an early age. He married the late Irene Woodley Carter on October 29, 1953.

James worked for 20 years with Georgia Pacific and 10 years with North Carolina Department of Transportation until his retirement. James taught his children the value of hard work and encouraged his family and friends with positive words. It was never a dull moment when he was in our presence because he always kept us laughing.

He leaves to cherish his memory, a very special companion- Violet Spencer of the home; seven sons- James Carter, Jr. (Tammie)- Greenville, NC., David Carter (Lena), Jesse Carter (Carolyn), Melvin Carter- all of Plymouth, Russell Carter, Clayton Chesson- both of Roper, Larry Carter- Snow Hill, NC.; two daughters- Lois Ann Johnson- Creswell, NC., and Elsie Crawford (Tavarus)- Oklahoma; sisters- Carrie Lee Gilliam- Roper, and Mary Lee Carter- Plymouth; 63 grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

James was preceded in death by three children- Eric Carter, Cleo Carter, and Robert Chesson; two brothers- Walter Norman and Joseph Walker; two sisters- Mecie Fayton and Essie Mae Carter.

Funeral services were held 2:00PM Friday April 19, 2013 at Shiloh Church of Christ(Disciples of Christ) with Vice Bishop Daniel Gilliam, Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Shiloh Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
