John Edward
Rascoe, Sr.
Apr 20, 1948 — Feb 1, 2017
John Edward Rascoe, Sr. was born on April 20, 1948 to the late Tee Arthur and Mary Rascoe; he entered into eternal rest with the Lord on the morning of February 1, 2017. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sally Peterson, as well as three brothers and one sister.
He was educated in the Washington and Bertie County school systems. John also attended Martin Community College, earning Certificates in Carpentry, Blueprint, and Welding. John's profession was also a ministry; he employed young men and taught them carpentry skills, provided food, transportation, and most importantly, the word of God on a daily basis.
John began preaching at a young age, but received his ministerial license at Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church under the spiritual leadership of Pastor Shelton R. Barnes. He was soon adopted as one of Rev. Barnes sons in the ministry, developing his passion for going into the hedges and highways to help the lost find Christ as their personal Savior.
John gave unconditional love to his wife, children and family. They treasure memories of the funny stories he told that kept the family laughing for hours. In 1999, he was reunited with his childhood sweetheart, Joanna Miller Hamilton, who survives. Their marriage created a blended family of ten children.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, his sons Kelvin Rascoe of Washington, DC; John Rascoe, Jr. (Davida) of Henderson, NC; Dametrian Turner of Akron, OH and daughter Tabitha E. Rascoe, Virginia Beach, VA; stepsons Ray Hamilton, Jr. and Kevin Deberry, both of Windsor, NC and Diarra O. Hamilton of Phoenix, AZ; stepdaughters Jacqueline M. Cherry of Windsor, NC and Ramona Hamilton of Phoenix, AZ.
John is also survived by his siblings and in-laws: Ronald A. Moore (Bernice), Lillian Hazel Pittman (Freddie), Mary E. Cox (Barney), Joseph Rascoe (Mamie), and Jasper Rascoe (Janis Ann), all of Plymouth, NC; Tee Arthur Rascoe, Jr. of Greensboro, NC; James Lewis Rascoe (Vernetta) of Jamesville, NC; Lynda Colbert (Jeff) and Keith A. Rascoe, both of Raleigh, NC; Lynn Rascoe of Rocky Mount, NC, in addition to fifteen grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
