John Henry Smallwood was born on February 17, 1912 to the late John Henry and Amy Garrett Smallwood of Chowan County. He departed this life into eternal rest on Sunday October 11, 2015 at home. He was blessed to have lived 103 years of life that was given by GOD.

Mr. Smallwood was a leader, friend, and supporter of his community for many years. He was loved and cherished by many. By few, he was known as the "medicine man". He could fix up a good medicine to make you feel better than the doctor would. He was always a man of his WORD.

Fishing was his most favorite hobby, sharing this hobby with his wife, daughter, grandchildren and many others.

He was dedicated and faithful to his Lord and Savior, whom he loved and served with his life. He was a dedicated member of Macedonia A.M.E. Zion Church for over 85 years. Although, he was not able to attend as he desired at the end of his life, he always kept a praise in his mouth unto GOD and his favorite, positive saying was "BE HAPPY" every day until he died.

Mr. Smallwood was a hardworking employee for House Chevrolet for over 25 years. He participated in many activities in his community and functions in his church such as the Plymouth Food Pantry, Church Deacon, Superintendent for the Sunday School Department, as well as part of the Trustee Board.

Mr. Smallwood was married to the late Eva Leonia Smallwood, who preceded him in death in October of 2010.

He is survived by his daughter- Eva Shelton-Plymouth, NC., grandchildren- Johnnie Smallwood, Caiyan Smallwood of Chicago, IL., Dianne Leak of Rocky Mount, NC., Katrina Carter, Derrick Carter of Plymouth, NC., 10 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
