Lloyd Lee "Jack" Howell was born December 7, 1928 in Roper, NC. He was the son of the late Bernice Howell and Vernon Norman. Affectionately called "Pops" by his children and grandchildren, he was raised by his grandparents, the late Erma and Van T. Howell. He departed this life on Thursday, November 22, 2012 at Washington County Hospital. He was 83 years old.
Jack was educated at the J.J. Clemons High School in Roper, NC. Before returning to Plymouth in 1997, he lived in Virginia, New York, and in Monks Corner, South Carolina, where he retired from Santee Jefferson Coal Mill as a Coal Loader after manny years of service.
Jack was a member of Macedonia AME Zion Church under the leadership of Reverend Roscoe Poole. Until his health started to fail, he served as a faithful usher. He was a devoted husband to his "first love", his wife Nancy, whom he married June 15, 1997.
Jack's favorite pastimes were fishing and "trash talking" with his buddies at Little Man Restaurant, McNair's Service Station, and at his cousin's Roy Hines Automotive Body Shop. He also enjoyed sitting in his chair on the front porch and waving at friends and strangers who blew their horns as they passed by.
He leaves to cherish his memory: wife- Shirley "Nancy" Howell of the home; eight children- Van T. Norman- Powells Point, NC., Victor Norman- Raleigh, NC., Kevin Howell- New York, NY., Jackie Howell- Roanoke, VA., Vanessa Smith- Kansas City, MO., Darren Howell New York, NY.,Sandra D. Norman- Richmond, VA., Horace Channel- Hampton, VA., two brothers- Randolph Nixon and Joseph Nixon- both of Plymouth; three sisters- Nancy Price- New York, NY., Gail Williams- Bronx, NY., Louise Blue-Syracuse, NY., one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, fifteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, three great great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends, among them Elder Jeffrey Hines, Mr. Shelton McNair and Mr. Sammy Heyward, Monks Corner, SC.
Preceding him in death are brothers Overton and Dick Howell, sister Eva Dudley, and son Jerome Downing.
Funeral services were 1:00PM Wednesday November 28, 2012 at Macedonia AME Zion Church with Rev. John Cornelius officiating. Burial follwed in Family Cemetery Cross Road Roper.
