Mary Cooper Nixon's Obituary
Mary Cooper Nixon was born on October 19, 1918 to the late Virgil and Mary Cooper , in Plymouth, NC; she transitioned to her eternal home on January 27, 2017.
Mary attended the public schools of Washington County and joined Spring Green Disciples Church of Christ at an early age. After marriage to the late Willie Nixon, she relocated to Roper, NC and began worshipping with Bethel Church of Christ, DOC. She was a homemaker and worked for several years with Robert L. Webb, contractor.
She loved to cook and sing. She liked to see people enjoy her cooking and regularly made hot biscuits for her husband to take to work. Mary was also an avid gardener, often canning the vegetables which she grew. The most important work of her life was instilling a Christian background in her children and offering sound, biblical advice to young people in her community. She taught them the importance of hard work and did not tolerate laziness or rude behavior.
Mary was preceded in death by one son; William Henry Cooper; two sisters; Flossie Cooper Harrison and Arleara Cooper Steggar; and five brothers; William "Babe" Cooper, Dewey Cooper, Elder Aronius Cooper, Elder James Cooper and Joseph Cooper.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons; Ernest L. Nixon and James A. Nixon of Roper, NC; three daughters; Laura Diann Jones of Chesapeake, VA; Arleara Catherine Lamb (Benjamin) of Virginia Beach, VA and Vera Marie Nixon of Plymouth, NC. she also had a great love for her step-children; Iris Lowndes (babe Rae) of Jamaica, NY; Dorothy Reynolds of Brooklyn, NY; Russell Nixon of Milford, DE; Willie Randolph Nixon of Roper, NC and Joseph Nixon, deceased.
Mary is survived by three sisters-in-law; Elder Clarine B. Cooper, Norfolk, VA; Eva Foggie, New York, NY; Sara Nixon, Amityville, NY; one brother-in-law; Cecil Nixon, Amityville, NY and one aunt, Captoria Smith of Plymouth, NC. She also leaves eighteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
