Morris Lee Garrett, Sr. was born April 17, 1930 to the late William Lee and Mary Garrett. His life's journey ended on September 15, 2014, Morris Lee grew up in the Westover area of Roper and attended Washington County Public Schools before enlisting in the Armed Forces. He served his country diligently during his tour of duty that included Germany.
He met and married Mattie Elizabeth (Lip) Lanier on February 5, 1954.
Morris Lee joined First Zion Grove Baptist Church at a very early age. After earning an honorable discharge from the Army, he obtained employment at the Georgia Pacific Company in Plymouth and remained there until joining the Weyerhaeuser Company as a Brick mason. A very diligent worker, he prided himself on his dependability and except for annual vacation time, never called out from the job. He was also a very involved Weyerhaeuser Union Member and participated faithfully in the Union's meetings and other activities until retiring from Weyerhaeuser Company after 45 years of service.
A member of The Brotherhood Social Club, he participated on and supported their numerous social activities. He was also a loyal fan of the local Softball League and would follow the games to their various sites each Sunday afternoon.
Morris Lee was well liked by everyone that knew him. Very soft spoken and extremely quick witted, he always had a ready response that would most often draw a smile.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 60 years- Mattie Elizabeth (Lip); four sons- Raymond Garrett(Martha)- Brooklyn, NY., Danny Bruce Garrett- Roper, NC., Darryl Lee Garrett- Roper, NC., Michael Riddick- Raleigh; five daughters- Yvette Davenport(Marvin)- Plymouth, NC., Sharon Garrett- Wake Forest, NC., Ora Lee Jones(Ernest Lee)- Plymouth, NC., Elyn Garrett Jones(Harvey- Baltimore, MD., Tina Garrett- Rocky Mount, NC., grandsons- Morris Lee Garrett, III (LaTonya)- Durham, NC., Timothy Jerrod Davenport(Adrianne)- Durham, NC., Morris Androzzio Garrett(Sabrina)- Winston-Salem, NC., Jo-Michael Garrett- Brooklyn, NY., Maurice Garrett(Terracina)- Brooklyn, NY., Julian Donnell Davenport(Constance)- Greensboro, NC., Garrett Bryson Graham- Rocky Mount, NC., Roderick Peele(Stephanie)- Long Island, NY.; granddaughters- Keisha Stith- Brooklyn, NY., Tasha Phillese Jones- Raleigh, NC., Amber Garrett- Brooklyn, NY., Nikia Tasheema Davenport- Greensboro, NC., Bria Genee' Jones- Baltimore, MD., Tykeera Nishe' Davenport- Plymouth, NC., eight great-grandsons, six great grand-daughters, four sisters-in-law (Minnie Smith- Brooklyn, NY., Arnita Cooper, Geneva Smith and Ruth Anne of Plymouth, NC., and a host of other relatives and friends.
He had one son, Morris Lee Garrett, Jr. who preceded him in death.
Funeral services were 12:00PM Saturday September 20, 2014 at First Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Wayne Welch, Jr. pastor, Reverend Robert Watts, eulogist. Burial followed in First Zion Grove Cemetery.
