Peter Jerry McNair (Pete) was born in Washington County on September 18, 1927 to the late John Thomas and Dollie Moore McNair. His life of humility ended January 30, 2014 at Roanoke Landing Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Pete attended the public schools of Washington County and graduated from Fourth Street Colored School. Upon graduation he immediately joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged after serving two years. He decided to continue his education at A & T College in Greensboro, NC. But when his father became ill, Pete returned home to care for his family and resume farming.

Pete joined Long Ridge Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. Under the leadership of Pastor Hoyt Hammond he was appointed trustee and remained through the leadership of Rev. Herman Young. He was a member of the choir and remained a faithful member until his health began to fail.

Pete married twice but had no children. He raised one of his nephews just like a son, Jerome McNair.

Pete McNair was a member of numerous civic and other organizations such as: Economic Improvement Council, Charter Member & Adjundant of the George Smith, American Legion Post No. 108- Plymouth, NAACP- Life Member, Carthagenia Lodge #38 (Prince Hall Affiliated Masons), Golden Crown Lodge No. 253 (Elks of the World, Inc.), Washington County Democratic Party (Member), Washington County Board of Elections (Chairman), Washington County Substance Abuse Coalition, Washington County Farmers' Home Administration Board, and the Migrant and Seasonal Farm Workers Association.

Pete leaves to cherish his memories: two sisters; Omia Robbins of Virginia Beach, VA; Irma Parker of Plymouth, NC. He was uncle/ father to Jerome (Cleo) McNair of Plymouth, NC; five other nieces and nephews to whom he was Pape Pete; two nieces; Emmalean Howell and Elsie Mae (Otha) James, one nephew, Bishop Daniel (Flora) Boston all of whom were raised in the home, a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. A very special friend…..Joan Ghee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dollie McNair and five siblings: three sisters Essie, Leora, and Callie, and two brothers; Cleophus and Thomas.

Funeral services were 1:00PM February 4, 2014 at Long Ridge Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. General James, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Moore-McNair Cemetery.
