Rosa Spruill Sutton's Obituary
Rosa Spruill Sutton, daughter of the late Bertha and William Spruill, was born May 18, 1935 in Plymouth, NC. Rosa peacefully departed this earth on July 24, 2013, surrounded by her family and loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her husband Odell Sutton, Jr. and a son, Bobby Ray Simmons, brothers and sisters; William (Sonny) Spruill, James (Bro) Spruill, Edward Spruill, Lincoln Spruill, Martha Spruill and Willie Alma Spruill.
Rosa married at age sixteen and went on to graduate from Plymouth Colored High School the following year, and at the head of her class. Six years later, she started her family and spent a lifetime of service in the field of Nutrition.
Rosa was always involved in her beloved Plymouth. She was a founding member of the Elite Social Circle, a community based organization designed to further the causes of the African American community.
She served for several years as Daughter Ruler of the Love and Union Temple #150 of the IBPO Elks of the World, Inc., where she remained a lifetime member. Rosa was also a member of the Sisters Unity #238 of the Eastern Star of Raleigh, NC.
She leaves to cherish her memories; a daughter, Deborah L. Sutton of the home, two sons, Derek L. Sutton of Greensboro, NC and Darryl L. Sutton of Raleigh, NC; two daughters-in-law; Hattie Brooks of Norfolk, VA and Karen Sutton of Gibsonville, NC; a very special niece that she claimed as her own, Stephanie Spruill Collins of Raleigh, NC; sisters, Mary Eliose Belcher of Baltimore, MD, Emma Spruill of Plymouth, NC; Bertha (Richard) Bynum of Denver, NC; and Shirley Harrell of Durham, NC.
Rosa is also survived by her brothers; Frederick Spruill, and Haywood (Delores) Spruill, both of Plymouth, NC and David (Sylvia) Spruill of El Paso, TX; four grandchildren; Bobby Ray, Jr., Daphne, Dorian, De'Erica; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
She leaves one brother-in-law, William (Inez) Sutton of Jamesville, NC; sisters-in-law, Byrd Lee Downing of Plymouth, NC; Kay (Dallas) Everette of Hillside, NJ; Sarah Jane (Harry) White and Sharon Gray, both of Bridgeton, NJ, a godson, Corey McNair of Plymouth, NC; a second cousin, Frank Wynn of Englewood, NJ and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and adopted children.
