Willie Mae Baker Pope, also known as Benna, was born July 2, 1923 to the late Emmaline and Alton Baker in Washington County. She departed this life on November 8, 2012 at Montefiore Hospital in New York City.
Benna grew up in Plymouth and graduated from Plymouth Colored High School. She joined Spring Green Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) in the 1930's. She married the late Willie Pope on June 4, 1949. In the 1960's they made New York City their home. While there she received advanced training with IBM as a Data Processor. She remained their until her retirement.
Benna was an excellent cook, neighborhood hairdresser and avid crossword puzzler. She loved to crochet, knit and sew.
Benna is survived by her two brothers- Alton Baker- Chesapeake, VA., Maurice Baker, and one sister- Merion Baker Anderson- Plymouth, NC., many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that affectionately called her Aunt Mommy.
Funeral services were held Tuesday November 13, 2012 at Longridge Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. General James pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Toodle's Cemetery
